You're invited to join Monica and I for a screening of The Story of the Great Bear Rainforest. The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest remaining coastal temperate rainforest on the planet. And as you probably know, unsustainable logging occurs at an alarming rate in BC. But last year, a huge victory was won. As a result of ten years of negotiation between environmental organizations, first nations bands, logging companies, and the BC government, two million hectares of BC's coastal temperate rainforest is now protected. While this a huge step in the right direction, it is not the final step. So far the forest is protected on paper, but steps have yet to be taken to ensure that logging does not occur in the no-logging zone, and that "lighter touch" logging practices begin by 2009. You're welcome to invite anyone you think the screening might interest. Unpackaged-local-organic snacks will be provided. If you would like adding something to the mix, please feel free to (unpackaged-local-organic snacks would be awesome--pardon the prescriptiveness, we're moving towards being a zero-waste household and will not be taking in garbage).
